IF you replace the drive, do not just throw out the plastic and metal rails screwed to the drive. The rail system is what allows an industry standard drive to slide into your enclosure. You may need some of the parts to help your new drive slide into your notebook. Once you have the new drive in, then you can throw out the extra parts.
If you decide to replace the drive, you can buy an external usb enclosure and use the old drive for extra storage. But there is more info you need to be aware of.
You said an external drive is too unreliable and you have an Acer????? It seems you've been gatting alot of bad advice from friends. Pretty much ANY brand of external HD has a longer "Mean time between failures" than the entire life expectancy than ANY acer notebook. An acer does not have the same reliability as the rest of the industry. I work corporate IT, I have many friends that run repair companies. Don't just take my word for it. Ask the IT guy at your work or your school! We will all tell you the same thing! You never see us carrying around an cer. You will usually see us with a dell, hp, compaq, mac, toshiba, lennovo or asus.
