Born in Vietnam, he moved to Orange County, California as a teenager. Once school had finished, he took a job cleaning tables at a casino in Las Vegas, the one place he had absolutely dreamed to be whilst living his early days in war torn Vietnam. It was here that Thuan Nguyen picked up the name Scotty.
He soon began learning to be a poker dealer, and it was only to be a matter of time before he began playing. By 23, he had gathered enough of a bankroll to quit his job as a dealer in what is now Harrah’s Casino. At first he saw great success, but addictions to drink and narcotics as well as a losing streak meant Nguyen went broke. In 2007 he took down the$2,000 Omaha 8 or Better game at the WSOP which netted him a profit of over $150,000. This was blown as well however, and his entrance into the 1998 WSOP where he famously made a name for himself was the result of a sub from a fellow player.
History dictates however that he went on to win the $10,000 main event and rocketed into the history books and poker hall of fame. His success has by no means diminished after this monumental win and the talented player has gone on to win 3 other WSOP titles, and 4 WPT titles including the very coveted championship title since then. His live tournament winnings are easily heading towards $8 million making him one of the most successful and wealthy players of all time.
In 2008 he famously won the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E event at the WSOP, however his behaviour whilst doing so has been called objectionable, and even against the rules by various players and commentators with many frowning upon his drinking, swearing and scolding of other players. Badly behaved or not, this is often considered to be the real championship event at the WSOP due to the different variations of poker that are continually rotating during the game. This win helped to cement his reputation as one of the greatest players of variations of fixed limit poker of all time.
