Can anyone recommend a really good starter book for a poker newbie like myself?

Hey caz - depends I guess on what kind of games you want to learn? If it's a straight forward holdem book you're looking for then "Getting Started in Hold 'em," by Ed Miller.

Also "The Theory of Poker" by David Sklansky is compulsory reading though a little heavy going and you'll probably get more from it if you know how to play a bit before reading it.

I never really got to check out any book rather got to learn by playing with friends and family. It is best to check out the way poker is played this way as it even gives us a good idea about the tricks or tips while playing along with learning.

I personally would advise on reading some of the million articles available on the net. There's a lot of great information provided by poker schools on the net and articles written by actual poker professionals.

I say this because reading can only get you so far, learn the poker basics from these articles, play the game, gain experience and learn from your mistakes.

Yeah information online is really helpful to get th desired tricks and tips of the games. Reading wouldn't be of good help and practice would make person perfect. So, it is really hard to read and learn on our own.

I never consulted a book just because I want to play poker. I learned it while I was with my friends. I think that you can use the search engines to find an information about poker.
