I can only answer your question from hearsay.
My sister in law is married to a guy who until he retired recently was in the US Navy.
He served all over the world and was usually accompanied by his wife and children. Occasionally he was posted to an operational base from where he would undertake extended missions at sea. In these cases his wife and family lived on base where they kept a home for him to come back to.
I can only tell you that the support she received over the moves was fantastic. I myself have been lucky enough to visit various places in the world, simply because he was posted there and I could visit the family.
