Phil Ivey Tip 2008/02/05 17:30 Karma: 3
I played at Full Tilt poker for quite some time, I still do when I get a chance but not as much. I still receive e-mails from them, they like to sent the tips from the famous players that play there. I usually just skim through them and think it's all the same tips I already know. But this one by Phil Ivey I liked a lot, and thought I should share it with you guys.

This is the link: Online Poker at Full Tilt Poker - How To Play - Pro Tips Archive

To summarize the article, Phil Ivey strongly believes in learning the game by playing the game. He says that calculating the odds and relying too much on other peoples advice can actually hurt you. And that you have to take chances and rely on your instincts.

I like what he is saying, and from my experience playing poker, it really makes sense.

I've just been skimming through a poker book that also says to rely on instincts once in a while. It says that just because we can't explain them always, doesn't mean we shouldn't listen to them. I feel a little too inexperienced at the moment to trust my instincts though. Think I need a few more wins under my belt.

I've been trying hard to practice my pot odds, but perhaps I should just play. I'm not going to argue with Phil Ivey.

Thanks, great tip!

That is so true, sometime I get a feeling in my gut that I for some reason I just have to act on. I can't explain it but i'm usually glad I listened to it.

That's one of the reasons why poker is so cool. There are so many different aspects to it right across the spectrum, from the mathematics and statistics right through to acting on your gut instinct.

I'm a firm believer in learning the game by playing the game. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of great resources around to help players improve their games or that poker books and tutorials don't have their place. They do.

However, the problem I see with people who rely on these kinds of aids is that they end up playing poker like someone else or - even worse - like everyone else.

One of the things that makes poker great is that it's a game where there's really no right or wrong way to play.

Every player has their own approach to the game and the key, in my opinion, is to take the things you learn from other players and incorporate them into a style of play that works for you.
