 South African Eric Hershler has stormed onto the poker scene after winning the 2026 LA Poker Classic. More incredible when you learn that as a relative newcomer to the world of Texas Hold ‘em, the tournament held in February 2026 was his first ever live action poker tournament! Hershler gave himself a 0% chance of winning the tournament- good thing he’s not a bookmaker.
After an intense but short (in WPT history in fact) heads up batter against the favorite JC Tran, Hershler eventually scooped $2,429,970 which incidentally also happens to be the biggest prize in World Poker Tour history. He also won a $25,000 seat at the World Poker Tour finals in February 2026. Not bad for a newbie!
Since then he has gone onto play in several other WPT tournaments and the WSOP last summer. Huge congratulations to Eric, yet again proving the South African poker player is fast becoming a mighty force to be reckoned with!
