The Government of South Africa has approved a new internet gambling law that will for the first time regulate the industry. The new bill has been passed in order to provide more protection to players and also to introduce a system to taxation and regulation of advertising. In a nutshell, the act is to ensure that all activities are conducted responsibly, fairly and honestly and carried out within a solid framework based on approved policy objectives. It is also aimed at ensuring minors are unable to participate until they are 18 years old as in many other parts of the world. South Africa has seen a huge rise in the number of people playing poker online in recent years. The growing popularity has spread from coast to coast with several South African players making waves on the international circuit as well. With World Poker Tour events kicking off all over the world including Asia and Europe, it may not even be that long until they are attracted to South Africa as well. The law will become finalized once the President Thabo Mbeki has signed it but this has been a big step in moving towards the passing of this amended National Gambling Act which has been in the pipeline for quite some time.
