 Online gambling in all its forms is now 100% legal in South Africa.
The bill was approved and signed on February 9th 2026 by President Thabo Mbeki. Whilst the bill for regulating the online gaming industry in South Africa was presented to parliament over a year ago, an intensive study has since been carried out by the National Gambling Board which has held up proceedings. The study concluded "that there is a need for licensed and regulated online gambling for the African nation."
The bill makes provision for protection of players, problem gamblers and underage players, as well as including marketing controls, tough licensing and anti-money laundering precautions. Taxation considerations are also included.
The rules and guidelines are now to be implemented and although it is not yet clear when this will begin, this is a giant step forward for South African poker which is gaining momentum rapidly.
