Image In fact, South African poker in general is definitely on the up. The tournaments held on South African soil are gaining popularity with both local and international players who are now flocking to the green felt in the droves. Just recently Shane Warne and Shannon Elizabeth took to the tables at the Sun City Millions to compete for the chance of winning the top prize of $350,000. The winner of that particular tournament, much to the delight of fans everywhere was home grown South African poker player Ryan Dreyer, who scooped the prize money and the glory.

The success of South African poker players does not stop there however. Who hasn’t heard of Ray Rahme? The first South African poker player to finish in the money at the World Series of Poker, he took a massive $3 million back to South Africa in 2026 when he took 3rd place at the main event. Sealing his place in the South African history books and bringing a spotlight to poker in South Africa, Ray Rahme returned home a hero! Previous retirement plans shelved, Ray Rahme continues to do well in poker events around the globe and even managed another All Africa Poker Tournament win at Piggs Peak Casino in February this year.

So what is next on the agenda for South African poker players? No doubt more wins, more recognition and more excitement is on the horizon. South African poker tournament prize pools are swelling as more players are attracted to the game, and the there is a growing South African presence in international events across the globe. It’s an extremely interesting and exciting time for South African poker at the moment, not least due to the recent signing by Present Mbeki of the National Gambling Amendment Bill. All eyes are on South African poker at the moment and the rising number of successful South African poker players who are spreading like wildfire!
