Warren Zackey, part of Team All Africa
Warren Zackey managed to take 22nd place in the main event which netted him $353,832 for his trouble! He finished day 5 as the chip leader of the tournament which is another record for a South African player. He also knocked out the only remaining female in the tournament - Leo Margets. Ray Rahme who came 3rd in this tournament a few years ago played well but unfortunately went out much earlier without being placed in the money.

Robert Kay, another great South African poker player also did well by coming 7th in Event 56. Ryan Brauer and Melanie Banfield both made it in the money during the WSOP and cashed. The success of the team put South Africa overall in 26th position at this year’s tournament, the ranking of which is based on total money won, bracelets received and number of players involved. With 23 players compared to the US’s 20,000, South Africa is really coming into its own in the poker world.

The final table of the WSOP will be played in a few months time. This year’s February 9 consists of Darvin Moon, James Akenhead, Phil Ivey, Kevin Schaffel, Steven Begleiter, Eric Buchman, Joe Cada, Antoine Saout and Jeff Shulman. That is quite a line up, and will no doubt be quite thrilling to watch. The new format of the tournament is designed to raise excitement surrounding the WSOP, much like in other American sports formats.

Congratulations to all of Team All Africa, you really did us proud in SA and we can’t wait to see you all in action in further global poker tournaments where your success will surely continue!
