I don't know where else to post this question so I tried on posting it here. I always thought that playing poker just takes a lot of luck and no skill, but some of you guys are implying that you will need more skills on doing it.

Poker is most definitely NOT a game of chance or luck. Even the top players in the world would say they had more to learn.

It is a very complex game that involves much more than simply the cards that you are dealt. Poker is really a mathematical game whereby good players act in a way that will ensure statistically they are likely to win more than they will lose over the long term. This gives the good player and 'edge' which will ensure winning money in the long term.

So many players totally ignore the mathematics behind poker and then claim to be experts. By doing this they will never become good players, because they will never have 'the edge' over their opponents which means they are largely reliant on luck to win.

So, get out the books and start learning!

And- if it was a game of luck, how would people like Phil Helmuth have so many WSOP bracelets? Surely the same person would never win more than once?

I never know that there is some mathematics that can be found on playing this game. I thought that you can just play the game and hope to win.

Poker is not entirely about luck, like all card games, luck is a factor, but poker also involves strategy and reading your opponents.

The point is, the player will more experience and knowledge of poker is going to win most of the time.

Lets say Player A has had years of experience playing poker online and Poker B has had only a few months of playing poker.

Player B can win a few games because of the luck factor, but if they play heads up 100 times, Player A will win the majority of the games.

I think that you are trying to say that this also involve intimidating your opponent because it can really spell the difference. When an opponent is intimidated, he/she can't think very well.
