Websites are written using a mark up language called "HTML". Although you could in theory make a website using just HTML it would be awful therefore if you'd want to become a web designer you need to know a bit more than HTML. You would probably want to know CSS which styles your web page and makes it so much more professional (It sounds like another language but really it's just an extension to HTML). That's all you would need to know to make a web page but if you'd want to make your webpage dynamic you'd need to know something like JavaScript.
